Here you will find answers to the most common questions about professional photography.
Including a photo in your CV can significantly increase your chances of being invited to an interview. A high-quality photo leaves a positive first impression and helps your qualifications stand out. Especially for important positions, a professional-looking CV overall is crucial. A professional photo is a key factor in appearing both competent and approachable.
Photo booths are convenient, low-cost, and quick to use during your daily routines. It’s understandable that many people want to handle photos quickly.
However, only a professional photographer can capture your personality, something a booth simply cannot do. You may also not know what makes a high-quality CV photo, which is where an expert like me comes in.
Imagine you need a photo for a management position at a respected company. Your presence, posture, and the setting are all crucial. As a photographer specializing in business portraits, I take the time to get to know you and understand your goals to create the best possible image.
I specialize in business portraits and CV photos, and I have been doing this for over 20 years.
I take the time to focus on your individual needs, without any rush. It is very important to me that the result is perfect. I believe this is reflected in the many positive reviews from my clients, which you can read on my website’s Google reviews.
The duration of the photo session varies depending on your needs, and your comfort during the shoot is my top priority.
Before your appointment at my photo studio, consider your outfit carefully – it should match the position you are applying for and the company’s dress code. Make sure your look is neither too casual nor too formal. Avoid bright colors and busy patterns, as they can distract from the main focus and may cause a moiré effect in photos.
Ensure your clothing is well-ironed and spotless, especially white shirts or blouses. Whether or not to wear a tie depends on your role and the company style. If you’re unsure about your outfit, feel free to bring multiple options, and we can decide together on the day which one works best for you.
Your face is the focal point of a CV photo, so good facial grooming is essential. Men should be clean-shaven, and women should wear subtle makeup and minimal jewelry. Men can also use makeup to cover blemishes if needed.
Hairstyles should not distract from your face. Men with short hair should get a fresh haircut before the shoot. A well-groomed beard is important, while a stubble or “three-day beard” should be avoided.
I also recommend covering tattoos with clothing and removing any prominent piercings, for both men and women.
Many applicants wonder: “Should I smile in my CV photo, or look serious?”
In general, you should appear friendly in your photo. A relaxed, closed-mouth smile can be very effective, as can a bright, open smile showing your teeth. However, depending on the position you’re applying for, an open smile may not always be appropriate.
For example, if you’re aiming for a leadership role, it’s important to convey confidence and professionalism. A strong, engaging gaze often communicates this more effectively than a big laugh.
During a professional photo session, I guide you with instructions on movement and expression. Authenticity is key – avoid overdoing or underdoing your expressions. You don’t need to freeze your face.
Before each shot, make sure you feel comfortable and can identify with the pose. Communicate openly with me about any concerns.
Good posture is essential, as slouched shoulders can make you look tired or insecure. Your posture also affects your facial expression.
Tip: Don’t forget to breathe – it helps prevent tension and keeps your expression natural!
After the photo session, you can review the images together with me.
Once you or we have selected your favorites, I will professionally edit your photos. Of course, I take your preferences into account. The retouched and color-corrected results should always look better than the originals, but never overdone. A CV photo should always appear natural.
After editing, your photos will be available for download via a personalized link provided just for you.
Once the photo editing is complete and you have approved your images, you can start using your photo. Include it with your CV. For paper applications, place it at the top right of your CV, or alternatively on the cover page.
You can also use your CV photo for your personal application website, LinkedIn profile, or Xing account. Place it in industry-specific forums, on your business card, or on your CV website to create recognition and make a positive impression.
